How to Identify Pure Honey: What Works and What Doesn’t

By Sanabil Organics  ·  Updated October 7, 2026

Many people ask how to identify pure honey, because fake and diluted honey is a real worry. The honest answer is that no home test can prove honey is pure. This guide explains which checks are useful, which popular tests are unreliable, and what to look for when you buy.

Can You Test Honey at Home?

You will find many videos showing how to test pure honey at home with water, your thumb or a flame. Here is what they can and cannot tell you:

  • Water glass test. Honey is supposed to sink and not dissolve. But how fast honey dissolves depends on temperature, stirring, moisture and whether it has crystallized, so the result is unreliable.
  • Thumb test. A drop that stays on your thumb suggests thick honey, but it only catches very watery honey. It says nothing about added sugar syrup.
  • Flame test. A dipped matchstick or cotton wick that burns is meant to show purity. It is unreliable, can catch only gross water dilution, and is unsafe.

These tests can show that a honey is very thin or watery, but they cannot detect modern sugar-syrup adulteration. The only method that can confirm purity with certainty is laboratory analysis, such as NMR testing, which reads the honey’s chemical fingerprint.

How to Recognize Pure Honey When You Buy

Since you cannot verify honey at home, buy wisely. These practical checks help you choose a trustworthy honey:

  1. The seller says what the honey is. Look for a clear type (sidr, acacia and so on), not just “pure honey”.
  2. The seller explains how it is handled. Is it heated? Is it filtered? Raw honey is not heated and is at most strained, not finely filtered.
  3. The price is realistic. Work out the price per kilogram. A price far below other sellers for the same type is worth questioning.
  4. The description is specific. A good seller can tell you the bee, the size and how to store it.
  5. The seller is reachable. You should be able to call or message and ask questions.

How to Know If Honey Is Pure: Signs That Mislead

Some popular “signs” of pure honey do not prove anything:

  • Crystallization. Pure honey can crystallize, and some honeys never do. Crystallization is not proof of purity, and it is not proof of fake honey either. It is a natural process, and raw honey often crystallizes sooner.
  • Colour. Honey ranges from almost clear to deep red-brown depending on the flowers. Colour alone says little.
  • Taste and sweetness. Different honeys taste different, and sugar syrup can taste sweet too.
  • Thick or thin. Texture depends on moisture and temperature.

What Raw Honey Looks Like

Raw honey is not heated and not finely filtered, so it can look cloudier than shop-bought honey and may contain tiny particles of pollen or wax. It may also turn thick or grainy over time. All the honey we sell at Sanabil Organics is raw. Read more about raw honey.

How to Check If Honey Is Pure: A Simple Buying Checklist

  • Choose a seller who names the type: sidr honey, acacia honey, white honey or red honey.
  • Ask whether it is heated or filtered.
  • Compare price per kilogram across sellers, using the same type.
  • Ask questions. A confident seller answers them.
  • Store it well and use it, rather than judging it by tricks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I identify pure honey at home?

No home test is reliable proof. Water, thumb and flame tests can only catch very thin or watery honey. Buy from a seller who is clear about the type and how the honey is handled.

How do I test pure honey with water?

Some people drop honey into water to see whether it settles. The result depends on temperature, stirring and moisture, so it cannot confirm purity.

Does pure honey crystallize?

Yes, it can. Many honeys crystallize over time, especially raw honey. Crystallization is natural and does not mean the honey is fake.

Is thick honey always pure?

No. Thickness depends on the honey type, moisture and temperature.

What is the most reliable way to check honey purity?

Laboratory testing is the only method that can confirm purity with certainty.

Can babies eat honey?

No. Honey is not suitable for babies under 12 months.
