How to Identify Pure Desi Ghee: Checks That Help and Tests That Mislead

By Sanabil Organics  ·  Updated October 9, 2026

Wondering how to identify pure desi ghee? Ghee is expensive, and cheaper fats are sometimes mixed in, so it is a fair question. This guide explains simple checks you can do at home, why none of them is final proof, and what to look for when you buy.

What Is Pure Desi Ghee?

Desi ghee (دیسی گھی) is clarified butter made from milk fat. Cow ghee comes from cow’s milk and buffalo ghee from buffalo milk. Banaspati, also called vegetable ghee, is a different product made from vegetable oil. If a pack labelled ghee contains vegetable fat, it is not pure desi ghee.

Simple Home Checks for Desi Ghee

Some checks give a rough indication. Treat them as clues, not proof:

  • Melt in your palm. A small amount of ghee usually melts quickly from body heat. If it stays firm and waxy, it is worth questioning.
  • Look at the melted ghee. Melted ghee should be clear. Cloudy or milky ghee may contain water or other additives.
  • Cool it slowly. Melted ghee often sets with a grainy texture. A very smooth, waxy texture can hint at other fats. Texture varies with how the ghee was made, so this is not decisive.
  • Smell it. Pure ghee has a clean, rich milk-fat aroma. Strange or chemical smells are a warning sign.

Some websites recommend tests using acid or iodine. Acid tests are unsafe at home and we do not recommend them. Even the safe tests can mislead, because the result depends on temperature and how the ghee was made.

Why Home Tests Are Not Proof

A home test cannot confirm purity. Different ghees look and behave differently depending on the milk, the season and the method. The only method that confirms what a ghee contains is laboratory testing.

How to Recognize Pure Desi Ghee When You Buy

Since home tests are limited, buying carefully matters most:

  1. The label names the milk. Look for cow or buffalo, not just “ghee”.
  2. The seller tells you what is inside. Vegetable fat or banaspati should not be in desi ghee.
  3. The price is realistic. Desi ghee costs more per kilogram than vegetable ghee, so a price far below others is worth questioning. Compare the same weight.
  4. The seller answers questions. You should be able to call or message and ask about the product.
  5. The pack states the size and how to store it.
